Change Self

Quotes from Gary Zukav:

Changing the world begins with the very personal process of changing yourself.  The only place you can begin is where you are, and the only time you can begin is always now.

When you have an emotional reaction to what you see, you are judging. That is your signal that you have an issue inside of yourself – with yourself – not with the other person.

If you react to evil, look inside yourself for the very thing that so agitates you and you will find it. If it were not there, you would simply discern, act appropriately, and move on.

We cannot stop the winter or the summer from coming. We cannot stop the spring or the fall or make them other than they are. They are gifts from the universe that we cannot refuse.  But we can choose what we will contribute to life when each arrives.

We cannot control what emotions or circumstances we will experience next, but we can choose how we will respond to them.

Each personality draws to itself personalities with consciousness of like frequency, or like weakness.  Therefore, the world of an angry person is filled with angry people.  The world of a greedy person is filled with greedy people and a loving person lives in a world of loving people.

Where is God?

I watched an episode of Grey’s Anatomy that was particularly moving to me.  People died.  There was a lot of unfairness.  A little boy got shot by police while climbing into a window of his own home.  It looked as though he was going to be ok, but he succumbed to his injuries.  A woman suddenly died after giving birth.  A young man tried to cut off his hand because his literal translation of the Bible compelled him to do so.

April, a deeply religious doctor, witnessed or was involved in these events.  Overwhelmed, she started to mentally relive the tragedies of her own life.  The husband of the woman who died was a man who April left at the altar, running away in her wedding dress with Jackson, another doctor.  Their marriage disintegrated after she had a miscarriage and, thereafter, became severely depressed.

By the end of the episode, April was emotionally drained and asked, “Where is God in all of this?”  She thought of the story of Job and Jesus on the cross saying, “Why has thou forsaken me?”

I started crying because this scene brought back traumatic experiences in my own life.  I used to repeatedly read the Book of Job trying to find some understanding of my perceived suffering.  At this point in my life, however, I realize that God expresses itself through us and that we do not always well express God. This Spirit that is perfect comes through the prism that is us.  We cannot see our perfection because the pain of the flesh overrides our awareness of our true Essence.

God exists in and through us.  Until we can fully express the Reality of God, we continue to manifest God imperfectly, diluted, and distorted by our own perceptions, by our own sickness, and by our own weakness.

We have drifted far away from our authentic selves.  I know what I’m supposed to do; but, somehow, I get caught up in the world, in the material.  The flesh takes over.  I read about the Infinite Way.  I say I understand it.  I know it.  I want it.  Yet, against my will it seems, I continue to express anger, fear, resentment, and judgment.  I repeatedly fail to demonstrate an assurance of abundance, love, and protection. Accept Change

Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness.  How do you know this is the experience you need?  Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.  Eckhart Tolle

We can’t plan life.  All we can do is be available for it.   Lauryn Hill

Only through constantly changing can we achieve our greatest potential.  Robin Hart

. . . and then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.  Anais Nin

Acceptance makes an incredible fertile soil for the seeds of change.”  Steve Maraboli

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.   Socrates

If you do nothing unexpected, nothing unexpected happens.  Fay Weldon

Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what next or how.  The moment you know how, you begin to die a little.  The artist never entirely knows.  We guess.  We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark.  Agnes de Mille

The World as One

To recognize one’s own insanity is, of course, the arising of sanity, the beginning of healing and transcendence.  Eckhart Tolle

Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens.  The sleeper must awaken.   Frank Herbert

Fear less, hope more, eat less, chew more, whine less, breathe more, talk less, say more, hate less, love more, and good things will be yours.  Swedish Proverb

We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.  J.K. Rowling

We are each other’s harvest; we are each other’s business; we are each other’s magnitude and bond.  Gwendolyn Brooks

Imagine there’s no countries.  It isn’t hard to do.  Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too.  Imagine all the people living life in peace.  You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.  I hope someday you’ll join us and the world will be as one.  John Lennon

The higher we rise on the scale of being, the easier it is to discern a connection even among things separated by vast distances.   Marcus Aurelius

We Are All Deserving

A woman expressed her anger at people who voted for Trump.  I responded, “People are struggling and they want someone to get them out of their struggles.” She very angrily said, “well, they should work hard.  You can’t just want something.  You have to go to school and do well in school.  You have to do what you’re supposed to do.  We have all worked very hard and that’s how we got to where we are.”

This woman has a well-off father who provided her with a head start in life.  She’s married to a professional who earns an upper middle-class income.  She comes from a background and a family of means.  Everyone thinks they’re working hard wherever they are and that they deserve whatever they have.  If other people would work just as hard, they would be successful like them; but, those others simply like to complain.

My simplistic viewpoint is as follows: Some people are born at the top of the mountain and yes, maybe they are working hard to stay there.  Other people are born in the middle of the mountain. They are trying to get to the top and yes, that is hard work.  Some people are at the bottom of the mountain, but at least they can see the mountain and see others trekking up and down the mountain.  Maybe they share tips and suggestions with others who are climbing or who have come down and are going back up.  They all know the mountain; therefore, everyone shares tidbits, suggestions, networks, referrals, and so on.  Who you know counts for a lot.

Then there are people who are born in a pit with very steep sides.  They exist at the bottom of the pit, or halfway up the pit.  Maybe they got to the top of the pit, but they’re exhausted and are just trying to stay at the top and not slip back down.  People in the pit are probably working much harder than the people at the bottom of the mountain because at the bottom of the mountain they’re not slipping back.  They’re on flat land.  People in the pit go up a little, but the sides are steep.  If they lose their grip, or they get tired, injured, or somehow lose their resources, they slide back down.  It becomes a cycle.  They slide down, then struggle to get back up.

Look Around in Awareness

You are a living magnet, constantly drawing to you the things, people, and circumstances that are in accord with your thoughts.   Dennis Kimbro

You are what you think about most of the time.  Dennis Kimbro

Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness.  James Thurber

What is going on inside you now is predictive of your future.  So it is wise to notice your thoughts and change them if necessary.  The Dalai Lama

There is only one true religion, and that is the religion of the heart.  God never named it Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc.  Man gave the titles, and that is what separates and divides us.  My dream is to one day see a world that comes together to fight for one cause – the human cause.  Muhammad Ali

It is not that Spirit produces or heals or corrects matter or the physical universe, but that we rise higher in consciousness to where there is less matter and, therefore, less discord, inharmony, disease, or lack.   Joel Goldsmith

Whatever we choose to focus on is what we will see manifested in our lives.  Joel Osteen

If you want to see, then begin to see how you see.

The stories you believe to be true are the ones your life will become.

Judge not, lest ye miss out on all the fun.

Though we may choose to view them symbolically, dreams are actually no more or less symbolic than everyday waking reality.  When the images and events don’t conform to our view of reality, we call them symbols.  When they do, we call them facts.

To see through the illusion of duality, remember that fear and darkness have no substance in themselves, for they do not indicate the presence of a second universal force, but are only names given to the one Light unperceived.

Change happens for you the moment you want something more than you fear it.

You are here on earth to unearth who on earth you are.

Miracles can only inhabit the reality of our awareness when we surrender our need for the familiar to our desire for the limitless.

Refusing to See Reality

There are two ways to be fooled.  One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.  Søren Kierkegaard

Nobody sees anybody truly but all through the flaws of their own egos.  That is the way we all see . . . each other in life.  Vanity, fear, desire, competition – all such distortions within our own egos – condition our vision of those in relation to us.  Tennessee Williams

Why did we become blind, I don’t know.  Perhaps one day we’ll find out.  Do you want me to tell you what I think?  I don’t think we did go blind.  I think we are blind.  Blind but seeing.  Blind people who can see, but do not see.   José Saramago

Nothing limits intelligence more than ignorance; nothing fosters ignorance more than one’s own opinions; nothing strengthens opinions more than refusing to look at reality.  Sheri S. Tepper

To crooked eyes truth may wear a wry face.  J.R.R. Tolkien

It is the curse of the powerful to be blind to their own faults.  Robert Fanney

Since we cannot change reality, let us change the eyes which see reality.   Nikos Kazantzakis

As we clearly sense and name our experience, we can notice what brings it about and how we can respond to it more fully and skillfully.  Jack Kornfield

Don’t take anything personally.  Nothing others do is because of you.  What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream.  When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.  Don Miguel Ruiz

We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.  Oscar Wilde

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.  Edgar Allan Poe

Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others.  Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval.  Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.  Lao Tzu

I believe I am in Hell; therefore, I am.  Arthur Rimbaud

Being Alone is OK

Lone Aviator Flickr

The physical aspect of being human gravitates towards being pack animals.  We take comfort in being part of group – family, team, community.  Being alone is not valued.  When we lose our feeling of not belonging, we can become depressed.  It’s not the norm.  But the spiritual side of ourselves, the essence that is ever evolving towards its Source, can cause us to become separated from those who are following different roads to the same destination.

Sometimes we have to be on our road alone for awhile until we meet like travelers.  This can be lonely and disconcerting.  We don’t want to leave our loved ones or them to leave us.  We don’t want to part from what has been comforting for years, what has been safe.  We don’t want to be isolated.

But if we are to grow, if we want to evolve, this is what is necessary.  We have to know that this is a period of transition that will soon pass into a new level of being if we can have the courage to persevere.  You may feel as though you’re all alone, but open your heart.  Listen with your inner ears.  See with your unfiltered eyes.  Understand with your eternal mind.  That which is within you will eventually manifest into material form.  Robin Hart
