Failure: Is It Necessary for Success? by Deepak Chopra in the October 2015 Newsletter issue
Excerpt: In a society that places a high value on competition and winning, everyone wants to succeed. It becomes difficult to discuss failure, which somehow translates into personal weakness, lack, or vulnerability. I’d like to reframe the whole relationship between success and failure so that both become part of a single process: your personal evolution.
As you evolve and grow, certain conditions appear on the path, and as they do, some people feel a sense of failure, while other people don’t. Yet in both cases, the same situation has occurred:
- An obstacle or resistance is blocking the way forward.
- A fear of inadequacy has undermined one’s confidence.
- An outcome expected to be positive turns negative instead.
- Support from people you counted on isn’t there anymore.
- A manageable task starts to become overwhelming and unmanageable.
- The work environment and/or key relationships become hostile.
Evolution never requires failure. Such situations are part of everyone’s life. What actually matters is your interpretation of what’s going on, and then your response based on this interpretation. Any situation, no matter how frustrating or challenging, can be interpreted as evolutionary. I don’t mean that you apply positive thinking to mask your fear and insecurity.
How to Rewrite Your Life Story by Tris Thorp in the September 2015 issue of Deepak Chopra’s Newsletter.
http://www.chopra.com/ccl/how-to-rewrite-your-life-story?
Excerpt: Rewriting your story requires that you take an honest look at where you blame other people or circumstances for the way your life has turned out. Do you hold a grudge for a promotion you didn’t get at work? Are you still bitter about a relationship that didn’t work out? If you find that you’re harboring resentment, ask yourself what you learned from that person or situation. Frame the story in the positive. Think about what gifts have manifested in your life as a result of you not having had your needs or wants met at that time.
As you become more adept at finding the opportunities in every challenge, you will begin to look on past experiences in a new light, and you will begin to rewrite your story. Everyone’s been denied something they wanted at one time or another, only to realize that hindsight is 20/20. Had you gotten what you thought was needed at the time, you may not have the gifts that you have today.
How to Transform Past Challenges Into Learning Experiences by Tris Thorp in Deepak Chopra’s Newsletter. Excellent article!
http://www.chopra.com/ccl/how-to-transform-past-challenges-into-learning-experiences?
Excerpt: “We always have a choice in how we interpret our experiences. We can choose to look back on past challenges through the narrow lens of defeat and resentment, or we can choose to open our hearts and take a deeper, more inquisitive approach by asking ourselves, “What is the gift or the lesson of this experience? How can I choose to perceive it differently so that I may benefit from the learning?”
Take, for instance, the relationship that you so desperately wanted to work out when you were a teenager or young adult. At the time, you probably couldn’t imagine life without them. And yet, now you might look back on your first love and thank the universe that it didn’t work out because if it had, you wouldn’t be in your current relationship. Or, maybe you had a job that you loved that came with a boss who was abusive. You had to leave—or maybe you were even let go—and it felt awful. Later, you found a job that was even more incredible than the last and you probably thought “Oh, thank goodness I got out of that last place!”
Each Tear by Mary J. Blige. I have this song on Mary’s CD The Breakthrough. It’s just as good on this video featuring Jay Sean. This song used to be my anthem. I played it over and over and it got me through many a hard time.
Steve Jobs’ 2005 Commencement Speech at Stanford University. SO Inspirational!
Jim Carrey. He is goofy, but if you get past that, he has some really good things to say. After 10 minutes it starts to pick up so you might want to forward it.
